The future of SURE-CHIGAI

When I though about the future of e-marketing last night, an idea about a gadget came up to my mind. I think it could be a hint to think about the future though I am still not confident if it is directly related to it.
The gadget is the "NINTENDO DS," small handheld game console. It has been very popular, and its total sales has reached to more than 30 million units only in Japan. Maybe some of you have played before.

The reason I remembered DS  was that it has "SURE-CHIGAI" communication feature. SURE-CHIGAI is Japanese phrase which means "pass each-other." So this feature let the game machine communicate with someone's machine and exchange data automatically with using WiFi when you pass through those who has DS too. For example, if you are playing the game in which you raise a virtual dog and passing by the other who is playing same game, his or her virtual dog will come into your virtual world. This communication happens when you are closing a lid. Because of this feature, the software became smash hit in Japan.

And now, we have smartphones' applications which offer the same feature. However, they are not so popular because they failed to propose new value. For example, you passed by someone and you've got his handle name or twitter account. So, what? You will be the friends with him?

But, I think if someone could create new value with this system, like dog's game, it would be a very strong e-marketing tool. You can pass by not only people, but also dogs, cats, posters, walls, sign boards...everything. So if you go through in front of them, they are sending message about things you are interested in. Isn't it interesting?
