Week 1: What is eMarketing?

According to Wikipedia (2008), eMarketing, or Internet Marketing, is referred to as the marketing (generally promotion) of products or services over the Internet. Sounds simple? I don't think so.

eMarketing, in my humble opinion, has an ubiquitous influence in today's business. I would like to relate this to a marathon. It is a relentless pursue towards the finishing line, of which, eMarketing doesn't have any.

As a human being, we have needs like water, air, food and shelter. Marketers aim to provide another form of perception, that the product is a "need". Professor Sugai's example of "sugar water with bubbles" is a clear indication on how successful Coca-Cola have done with their marketing. 6 years ago, no one would have ever predicted Facebook's status in today's technological world.

With all due respect, offline marketing is still necessary to some extent. Radios, newspapers and etc.. My folks listens to radio and watches TV all the time. Based on the TV advertisements, we have been going to various restaurants that was recommended on TV!

To conclude, eMarketing is only a subset of the whole Marketing Game and should not be the only means of advertising to our products. However, if your business has high elements of IT usage, then online marketing would be a "must-have" in your company.

Looking forward to the next few sessions!
