Why unique visitors can be so different?

The article challenged the current methods of measuring "unique visitors". Web analytics platforms typically define an unique visitor as: a unique cookie set on a unique computer and a unique browser that accesses your website. That means if any of those 'unique' factors are changed, one visitor can be counted multiple; or, if two visitors sharing those 'unique' factors (such as members in a family), they are counted as one.
