Permission-based email marketing: "Single opt in" versus "double opt in"

In relation to the topics to be covered in the next class, I found an article written by Simon Akers which describes both the "single opt in" and "double opt in" approaches in relation to email marketing, and the article even compares the pros and cons of each. I personally advocate permission-based marketing, and would prefer a "double opt in" approach for email marketing, but this could be due to my consumer-biased, "spam adverse" mindset. At the end of the article, there is a link to another interesting article, titled "Email Marketing Tips - Holding Peoples Interest" written by Tyler Houts. Both articles are short and highly readable.
