Neiman Marcus

i found the prof.sugai mentioned " neiman marcus" in the last class, http://www.neimanmarcus.com/
this is one of my favorite online shopping websites, as prof. suagai said in class, ppl always forgot to read the Security & Privacy before they shopping online, definitely i never read this part before, today i tried to ready the security and privacy of this website, i found they mentioned a lot, including the "cookies" and " Web Beacons", and how they use them. and u will suprise they share ur information not only this web, and also the third parties..that's why i conflicted myself, one side i donot want to ppl to know my private information, another side online shopping is very convenience (specially in IUJ area),maybe that's why there are still
25% donot want to buy products online.

nice information on the internet user database usage xin...however, I was thinking about the state of this ultra privacy disclosure condition that's coming along the internet era

in my opinion, aside from the negative responds on the previous posts regarding this kind of disclosure topic. I saw there are also positive sides of this condition (let alone seeing from the marketer point of view). I think in this hyper inter-connected world its just simply ridiculous if we want to keep the privacy of our personal data from the society, because since the first time we logged-on to the net, for those who 'knows' how to do it, they can easily track our virtual habits (refering when prof sugai taught us about 'cookies') and translate it into our 'real' habit through series of analyzes

prove : the level of social networking sites that keeps increasing by day (suggest that people are trying to reveal as much as information about themselves in order to connect) and not the otherway around

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_social_networking_websites

for some people, this might not works, but consider this, how much difference that they have compared to those who already registered in those kind of sites or made a purchase online

i think there are companies, who most likely using their CRM, that have aggregated the data from those kind of social networking sites in their marketing research/plan

so...what's the point being afraid? it's just simply the impact of the ultra-connected world which makes all of us here today ;)

Atom,

I agree with your comment for some extend that we should not be afraid of disclosing our personal information as we are in ultra-connected. However, I believe that information should be collected with "opt in" approach and consumer should have the right to know what information about us that being collected.

Think of this scenario. Your personal data is being collected, your profile is being built. Day by day the data aggregators start to know more about you and keep track of you. They even collect your credit card number, your id, your national health insurance, your driving license, and so on. And, one day this information is highjacked by underground organized crime. They use your information to exercise crimes, use your credit card to buys stuffs online, use your personal id to issue loans subscriber to hundred of credit-card online and so on. Will you be able to say "what's the point being afraid? it's just simply the impact of the ultra-connected world which makes all of us here today" - Think about it. What would you do if you are in such situation?

Therefore, apart from security & Privacy disclaimer I think the site should show us what information they collected before we leave the site. They should allow us to opt out shall we feel that the data collected is too personal.
